Unfortunately for Ben Jelloun, this is scarcely a fair comparison as Coates' book is easily the best book I read in all of Doing my best to exclude that comparison, I still think that Ben Jelloun's essay is only slightly above average but maybe I would have a different perspective if I had a child that I wanted to explain racism to.

It was in reading the response essays of David Mura and William Ayers yes, that William Ayers of Weather Underground infamy that I found the perspective and insight I had been seeking in this book. When I view this book as a whole all the essays together , I found this to be an enjoyable and informative read.
The way the story is told is really cool as it is a sort of talk with his daughter which makes the whole thing really enthralling It's a didactic description of racism, thought to explain it to kids. It's simple and easy to follow. However I found a couple of problems with this description: first, it is used to introduce judgements that are totally irrelevant to the topic, such as the opinion of the author about animal cloning.

I would have liked to read more of a narrative from Jelloun on the subject. His thoughts and points are incomplete and I would have really liked to know more of how he felt! I'm excited to use this for my daughter. Also, would love to find something in America to help explain racism as I feel we deal with slightly different types of racism being founded with slavery and colonialism. The explanation was clear and easy to follow, using common words, so that the 10 yr old girl can get, what does racism mean. A good book to improve my German. Important when it was published in , still very important. The letters in response to this book published in my volume bring up real life thorny questions about handling racism, especially as a child.
A unique approach to a complex topic. If you work with kids I highly recommend this book. It points out the obvious and the sometimes not so obvious. Nice way how racism is explained to a child.
